Being a golfer is a privilege—and being a high handicapper? That's fantastic. It means your golf journey is only beginning, full of discoveries, progress, frustrations, breakthroughs, and endless opportunities to learn.
Like many golfers, I started playing right before the pandemic. What began as a new hobby quickly became much more than that. Golf provided an escape, a source of focus, and a way to stay engaged during a period when so much else felt uncertain.
Golf is a long and rewarding journey. Through this website, I'll share selected reflections on the fundamentals, equipment, practice, and the lessons I've learned along the way. My hope is that these experiences encourage you to better understand your own game, enjoy the process of improvement, and continue building your own golf journey.
Every golfer's journey is built on a few fundamental building blocks. For me, that meant continually revisiting grip, ball position, posture, and the basic movements that keep my swing connected. No matter how much I improve, I still find myself returning to these foundations whenever my game starts drifting.
I've also learned that golf clubs are far more personal than I initially thought. Finding the right setup involved plenty of experimentation, adjustments, and lessons learned along the way. The goal was never to build the perfect golf bag, but to build one that gave me confidence and simplified decisions on the course.
In the book, I explore both topics in much greater detail—from the fundamentals I keep returning to, to the journey that shaped my current bag and approach to the game. For now, my encouragement is simple: keep experimenting, keep learning, and focus on building a game that works for you.

One of the biggest lessons golf taught me is that improvement rarely comes from searching for shortcuts. When I first started, I expected lessons to provide all the answers. Instead, I gradually learned that real progress comes from a combination of guidance, experimentation, reflection, and consistent practice.
Over time, I stopped looking for quick fixes and started focusing on building a simple, repeatable approach that worked for me. The basics became my anchor, and taking notes helped me better understand patterns, tendencies, and areas that genuinely needed attention.
The book explores these ideas in much greater detail, including the lessons, mistakes, and practice habits that helped shape my game. If there is one takeaway I'd leave here, it is this: be patient, stay curious, and keep showing up.
Golf means different things to different people. Some golfers are chasing lower handicaps, others simply enjoy spending time on the course with friends. Most of us probably fall somewhere in between.
What I've learned is that golf is far more enjoyable when we stop expecting perfection. The game is challenging, unpredictable, and occasionally frustrating—but that's also what makes it so rewarding. Every round, good or bad, has something to teach us.
My encouragement is simple: keep learning, keep improving, but don't forget to enjoy the journey. At the end of the day, we're fortunate to be out there playing this wonderful game.
Golf starts with fundamentals, equipment, and practice—but it certainly doesn't end there. As my journey progressed, I discovered that many of the factors influencing my enjoyment and improvement had very little to do with swing mechanics.
Learning how to keep my body ready to play, understanding the role of the handicap system, navigating off-season practice, managing expectations, and building a sustainable approach to improvement all became important pieces of the puzzle. Some of these lessons were straightforward. Others took me much longer to appreciate.
These reflections eventually became a significant part of The Lousy Golfer. They helped me understand that golf is not simply about hitting better shots, but about building a game—and a process—that fits our goals, lifestyle, and physical realities.
If you'd like to explore these topics in more detail, along with the lessons, mistakes, experiments, and journal prompts that shaped my journey, you'll find many of these topics explored further in the reflections area of this website. For a deeper dive into the lessons, experiments, and framework that shaped my journey, the extended versions can be found throughout The Lousy Golfer book.
